Weedpatch at a glance

Weedpatch is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Kern County, about 10 miles south-southeast of Bakersfield, at an elevation of about 387 feet. The 2020 census counted 2,206 residents. It lies off State Route 184 (Weedpatch Highway), south of Lamont and about 5 miles south of State Route 58.

A place with a famous history

Although the name "Weed Patch" was used for the site as early as 1874, the community itself began in 1922, and it was also once called Alexander's Corner. Weedpatch is known as the site of the Arvin Federal Government Camp, called "Weedpatch Camp" in John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath. During the Great Depression, it was a government rescue center for migrant workers fleeing the Dust Bowl. According to Wikipedia, the camp still aids migrant workers and is about a mile south of Weedpatch on Sunset, just off Weedpatch Highway.

That farmworker history is still part of the community today. Weedpatch is surrounded by fields, orchards and vineyards, and many households work in agriculture.

Septic in a rural farm community

Weedpatch is unincorporated, and how individual homes are served varies. In rural parts of the southeast valley, many homes rely on on-site septic. To confirm how your property is served, check your tax bill for a sewer charge, look for a septic lid or cleanout in the yard, or ask Kern County Environmental Health about records.

Full households, faster-filling tanks

Many homes in farm communities house large or extended families. The three to five year pumping guideline is for an average household. A tank serving six, eight or more people fills much faster. Signs your schedule is too long include slow drains, gurgling, and a provider telling you the tank was very full. If that happens, shorten the interval. See how often to pump a septic tank.

Some properties also have more than one home on a lot. If two households share a tank, it will fill faster still. Tell the provider how many people and how many homes are connected.

Farm surroundings

Irrigation from nearby fields can raise soil moisture, and a damp drain field absorbs less wastewater. Farm trucks and equipment can crack older lids or crush lines if they cross the system. Keep vehicles off the tank and field, and keep irrigation water away from it.

Older homes and the cost of waiting

Weedpatch has many older homes, and older septic systems are less forgiving. Worn baffles let solids slip into the drain field, and a clogged drain field is far more costly to fix than a routine pumping. Asking about the baffles and lid at each pumping is an inexpensive way to catch problems early. If cost is a concern, our guide on what affects septic pumping cost explains the general factors and how to ask for a clear quote.

More is in what not to flush.

When to call

If drains slow down across the house, toilets gurgle, you smell sewage outside, or the ground over the field is soggy in dry weather, call. If sewage backs up indoors, stop using water and call right away.

How it works when you call from Weedpatch

Call (661) 320-8662 with your address in Weedpatch, what is going on, and anything you know about the tank. We pass your request to an independent local septic provider who serves your area. The provider confirms timing, explains what the visit includes, and gives you a quote before any work begins. We are a referral line, not a septic company, and providers set their own prices and schedules. Providers commonly handle septic pumping, locating buried lids, inspections for home sales, and repairs such as baffles, lids and drain field problems.
